The Californian is the second most popular rabbit bred for meat. It is an attractive rabbit. It is usually white all over except on its nose, ears, feet and tail, which are black. Some Californians are chocolate, blue, or lilac. The Californian’s back and hips are meaty. Its overall size is somewhere between a medium and large rabbit. You can expect a Californian to between 8 to 10.5 lbs when fully grown. This pink eyed rabbit is round in appearance and has erect ears.
The fur of a Californian rabbit is full all over, plush, and considered to be, “quality.” The coat is short. The Californian’s fur goes through phases where the fur looks better at certain points in its life than others.
Californians do well in the home, but if you plan to cage it, you need to have a cage large enough to accommodate a large rabbit.
The temperament of a Californian rabbit can be inconsistent. It enjoys human contact, but on its own terms. It does not like to be held, so for the purpose of meat producing, the Californian is recommended for experienced rabbit handlers only. However, Californians are generally friendly and calm.
